The Gentlemen – 2019

Movie reviews for the masses

How can we go wrong here? Written and directed by the GREAT Guy Ritchie. Starring Matthew “allrat, allrat, ALLRAT!” McConaughey. Also starring Hugh Grant, and a smaller but still substantial role for Colin Farrell. This is a slam dunk, right? Now wait a minute, there is still one more factor: the movie is about McConaughey’s role (Mickey) as a kingpin marijuana producer in the UK, raking in £100,000,000 annually. Oh HAIL YEAH! I even took a few extra tokes before the start of this one. And it paid off just in the opening credit scenes, trademark Ritchie – I was mesmerized already.

Guy incorporated a great twist in storytelling, as Hugh Grant’s character Fletcher (a private detective) basically told most of the story as written in a screenplay entitled “Bush” that he showed to Ray, Mickey’s right hand man, and played by Charlie Hunnam. Mickey wanted to sell his business to another American, billionaire Matthew Berger, but multiple plot twists put the deal in jeopardy. Suffice to say, this was an engaging and entertaining plot and every single character was superb – no slouches, no sloppy performances.

One great line by Mickey’s wife Rosalind, played by Michelle Dockery: “There is fuckery afoot!” Gotta remember that one – will come in handy! And she also had the best fancy shootin’ scene in the entire movie.

So I don’t want to give too many details about the plot – Jiminy Christmas, why ruin the fun of watching a movie? The operative term here is just that, “WATCH THIS FRICKIN’ MOVIE!”

‘Nuff said – good ol’ uncle CK won’t lead you astray. Seven bails of weed out of eight.

Let me have it!
