Lost Transmissions – 2019

Movie reviews for the masses

Well, here goes another Simon Pegg drama with Simon starring as schizophrenic musician Theo. Now let’s be clear here – I am a yuge fan of Simon Pegg and love his comedies, especially the ones he co-writes. This one also starred Juno Temple as Hannah, with a smaller role by Alexandra Daddario as Dana.  Other than the overtly hammy opening scene with Theo playing the piano and singing, Simon did a masterful job in this one. And Juno Temple was excellent as Hannah, a depressed secretary and part-time song writer. Sadly, that’s the only positives I can come up with in this flick. It’s basically the sad story of a mentally ill musician who goes off his meds and rapidly spirals down a drain of delusions and bankruptcy. You know this is not going to be a feel-good movie or have a happy ending. The music, dialog and story were so awful, depressing and boring I dozed off several times during the first hour. The interest level picked up slightly after that and I managed to keep my eyes open the rest of the movie, but after watching the bitter end, I wished I had slept thru it.

This is the kind of movie that was such a downer that a more appropriate ending would have been the following: gather all the awful, depressing, and boring characters into a field, holding hands in a circle and staring up in the sky as a gigantic asteroid ripped through the atmosphere, slammed into the earth and obliterated all life on the planet. At least that ending would have evoked some sense of closure. See Hollywood, if you listen to ck more often, you won’t churn out so many dreadful duds.

Turrible – one tablet of Prozac out of thirteen.

Let me have it!
